REFLECTIONS ON RELIEF AND REHABILITATION WORK IN THE MOKEN COMMUNITY,LAO ISLAND, THAILAND: THE ISSUE OF POWER RELATIONS

There are about 800 Moken in Thailand living in 5 communities.  Rawai Beach Village in Phuket Province and Lao Island Village in Ranong Province are living in poverty and deprivation even after tsunami rehabilitation.  This reflection report focuses on the Moken community on Lao Island before and after tsunami and follows the change in terms of power relations and lessons learnt from relief and rehabilitation efforts carried out by different agencies/organizations.  These lessons, though specific to Lao Island context, are useful as several are in common with other places and should not be repeated in the future.  The last part of the report is the summary of lessons learnt and recommendations for future interventions. The main methods of collecting information for. this report are literature review and field visits.
