THE URAK LAWOI OF THE ADANG ARCHIPELAGO TARUTAO , THAILAND
BY SUPIN WONGBUSARAKUM
This book gives comprehensive information about the Urak Lawoi of the Adang Archipelago, beginning with the origin, the settings, traditional ways of life, beliefs, ceremonies, arts and crafts, and going on to how the Urak Lawoi joined the global economy and ending with the part on challenges and opportunities. An excerpt from the introduction reads, “Given the rapid pace of modernization and globalization of the market economy, traditional cultures worldwide run a great risk of disintegration, taking with them potentially valuable local knowledge. The author hoped that this volume will help raise awareness of the Urak Lawoi’ people, their culture, and the challenges they face in conserving their traditional ways of life so naturally tied to the environment of the Adang Archipelago and the sea.” The book is very well-illustrated, easy to read, and very informative.
